Galatians 3:19-24

Following the rules and regulations of the Law only sustained an existing relationship with God. But what if the relationship was broken, or was never there at all? The Law did nothing to make a person right with God; obeying it did not have the power to actually change the person whose relationship with God was broken because of sin. It offered a “temporary fix” (the sacrificial system), but it was never permanent. In fact, the Law “locked” the rule-follower into a never-ending sin-sacrifice-sin cycle. The answer was in the Promise given. Even the Law looked forward to the time when God's promise would be fully revealed through Jesus’ Calling. And Jesus faithfully fulfilled his Calling through his life and his sacrifice (not ours). By his resurrection, he “bought” our freedom from sin and death, its consequence. No more being “locked” into the sin-Law-sin cycle. Getting right with God is now possible – trusting Jesus, the Promise-fulfiller, his life and his sacrifice.
How has an understanding of, and trust in, the Promise of God freed you from your sin-Law-sin cycle? How has your experience of freedom from the Law helped you to appreciate Jesus and what he has done for you?
Prayer: I was tired, Lord. I was tired of following the rules, doing the right thing, and yet feeling far away from you. And then your love broke through! You freed me from the imprisonment of my own futile effort(s) that gained me nothing, especially when it came to knowing you any better. I now see that you have always loved me, even though I kept running in every direction but toward you. And when I stopped running and turned…there you were, welcoming me with open arms. You made me right with you; I just needed to fall into your arms. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
