Galatians 3:6-9

Abraham never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ, or of his death and resurrection. All he heard was a promise given by God, “I will make of you a great nation and will bless you…I will bless those who bless you…all the families of the earth (both your own family, and those not biologically related to you, i.e. “Gentiles”; my addition) will be blessed because of you” (Genesis 12:2-3). All he had to do was leave his “family of origin” and go to an unknown place God would show later. And Abraham believed God at his Word and went – even though he and Sarah had no children at that time. And that was all God needed – simple belief and acting on it. Abraham was “put right with God” because of that simple faith. Our different theologies on how God does things don’t really matter to him. Anyway, whoever believes that Jesus is who he says he is, and will do what he says he’ll do, is like Abraham, and in fact is a spiritual descendant of his. And it's all based on simply taking God at his Word.

How simple has your faith been: Have you trusted only in what Jesus has done for you on the Cross – and not on your good, impressive deeds? Do you celebrate the fact that after trusting in Christ alone, you are now “descendant” of Abraham’s, and that he is making many more descendants around the world?

Prayer: How awesome it is, O God, that you would make me part of your family and a spiritual descendant of Abraham’s. And none of it was my work. All I did was trust in you, my Jesus. I am now one of many in the whole world whom you are making right with yourself. May that knowledge keep me humble in my relationship with others who don’t yet know you. Use me as a blessing in their lives. Amen.
