JUNE Mission of the Month
Think of how frightened someone must be to leave their home. They pack a few belongings for the arduous trip, often with children in tow hoping a relative will take them in. A long journey begins from Afghanistan, Ukraine, or Central/South America, often involving many stops in unfamiliar areas.
These are the exiles of today like we have been discussing in our Bible study. People forced from their homes by war, famine, unstable governments, and the desire for a better life. We are called by Jesus to help the stranger, and give aid to those in need without judgment, just as he did. This is not a border issue nor a political stance. This is about helping those in need.
Immigrants Rights Action (IRA) is a relatively new nonprofit in Doylestown helping refugees that are already here and giving them dignity. They meet their needs in many ways. They speak their language or find a translator or use Google to communicate with them. The IRA can access and support their basic needs such as food, clothing, healthcare, and shelter. They help with many of the administrative tasks of adjusting to life in a new community, including enrolling children in school, getting documents for a driver’s license and employment. The language barrier and fact that everything is done online is challenging.
With a staff of 3, Immigrant Rights Action were able to assist over 700 people last year. These people need a fresh start in a safe place. We have selected Immigrant Rights Action as the Mission of the Month to raise awareness at DUMC. Immigrant Rights Action is now recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice as the only non-profit legal immigration services provider in Bucks County. They receive no federal or state funds.
We encourage you to tell others about this growing organization in our community. Please consider donating monetarily. Other ways you can help is by putting your name on a volunteer list. You can volunteer to be in the office one day (office hours 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Tuesday – Thursday), to be a driver to legal consultations and court hearings, donate gift cards to grocery stores or department stores, or collect new underwear and new socks. We’ll have a donation bin in the lobby. More info can be found on their website at: Immigrant Rights Action | Immigrant Rights
Your support makes a difference in the life of your neighbors and they are grateful for every donation. Together we can impact people’s lives for the better.
